Budapest communist cars

Posted on Nov 18, 2015

During a recent trip to Budapest I came across a few old cars dating back to the days of communism. During this period, Hungarians had few choices when it came to car ownership, with Ladas, Trabants, Skodas and Fiats pretty much all you could get. The cars were very basic, pretty uninspiring and were incredibly difficult to get hold of. Merkur was the only company with a license to import cars and the long drawn-out process of buying one included an arduous assault course of meetings and applications. Then finally, when your application had been accepted, you often had to wait several years before you got your hands on it. Well worth the wait I reckon!
